One of its nicest features is the ability to define grids. One of my biggest problems with any page layout software is making sure that adjacent columns line up -- part contents for card part 2 ----- text ----- This: Fourscore and seven years ago our forefathers brought forth -- part contents for card part 3 ----- text ----- Fourscore and seven years ago our forefathers brought forth -- part contents for card part 4 ----- text ----- Not This: Fourscore and seven years ago our forefathers brought forth -- part contents for card part 5 ----- text ----- Fourscore and seven years ago our forefathers brought forth -- part contents for card part 6 ----- text ----- The following cards help calculate the correct vertical grid. -- part contents for card part 10 ----- text ----- So what's it all about. Basically this stack was designed to help me layout multicolumn material and preserve the alignment of the baselines of each line in adjacent columns. If you downloaded this from Compuserve you should also have downloaded a test RSG document that illustrates some alignment problems. This stack can help you calculate the vertical grid so that you can have exactly uniform grid spacing. In order to take full advantage of the grid you must never use the auto option in line spacing. Always set it to the line spacing option you used to calculate the grid in this stack, or a multiple thereof. (i.e. if you choose 24 point linespacing in designing the grid, you can set the RSG Format Menu Linespace option to 12 points.) A final thought. In some ways this stack makes the grid calculations backwards. Ideally you would set your top and bottom margin then decide how many rows of a given linespacing will fit in the space available. I invite anyone who desires to modify the stack to do that. (I probably will get around to it one of these days.) In the meantime a little trial and error will not hurt you. One more observation. If you do not make all (repeat ALL) the necessary settings in RSG then tweek the text boxes so they SNAP TO the grid, then you will not see the benefit of this stack. In fact you may think I have made some oddball mistake in the calculation. That is possible, but I have tested it quite a bit and it works for me just fine so check those settings in RSG one more time.
